University of Pikeville, founded in 1889, is a private liberal arts university in Pikeville, Kentucky. The new Health Professions Education Facility, on the campus of UP, was built into a 45-degree sloped hillside in the Appalachia region. This facility houses the Kentucky School of Optometry and the Elizabeth Akers Elliott School of Nursing. The 103,000 square foot, 7 story, new construction building was completed in mid-2016. Strong Tower was contracted by Codell Construction Company to enclose this stunning structure designed by Trivers Associates.
The exterior envelope, provided by Strong Tower, includes Kawneer’s 1600 Wall System 1 and System 2 Curtainwall in a painted Charcoal finish. Complimenting the framing package, Kawneer also provided 350 Medium Stile Standard Entrances and Trifab GV 451 Storefront.
John W. McDougall, Inc. was brought onboard to provide the Aluminum Composite Wall Panels. The Larson by Alucoil panels were fabricated in two sheens, Matte Charcoal and Glossy Charcoal. The alternating installation of the panels added depth and dimension to the overall appearance of the exterior.
Viracon, an Architectural Glass Fabricator provided the glass and glazing. A unique design provided Strong Tower the opportunity to coordinate with Viracon, the glass provider, and Trivers Associates, the Architect, on a custom acid etched pattern. The layout, which can be viewed on the south, front facing elevation, includes alternating patterns on the second and third surface of the insulated glass further adding to the visual depth and dimension to the building design as intended by the Architect.
Strong Tower skillfully fabricated the Kawneer curtainwall frames at its Louisville, KY homebased fabrication shop. Following installation, each frame was meticulously packaged in preparation of Strong Tower’s delivery through mountainous regions to the southern town of Pikeville.
